No gasp of relief - only a sit-down!

In the regional edition of the Stuttgarter Zeitung in Göppingen, an article was published today on the trial of the four ringleaders of the Autonomous Nationalists Göppingen, which has been running since January . In this article, hardly any opportunity is left out to downplay the threat posed by right-wing ideas. I think that’s a pity and it disappoints me a bit. Especially in the current time, when right-wing agitation is increasing again against the backdrop of the rising number of refugees, I consider this to be extremely dangerous.
Already in the first lines of the article, the authors make it clear that only people who seem to be, let’s say, “somewhat confused” will be present as spectators at this trial, if they are present at all:
Die Frau blickt irritiert. Ob es sich denn nicht um den Koffermordprozess handele, fragt sie flüsternd, nachdem sie eine Dreiviertelstunde lang konzentriert Telefonmitschnitten gelauscht hat, die ein Ermittler des Landeskriminalamts dem Gericht vorgespielt hat. Nein, hier gehe es um die Autonomen Nationalisten Göppingen (ANGP), bekommt sie zur Antwort. Schnell packt die Dame ihre Sachen und verschwindet. Es war die erste Zuhörerin seit Langem, die bei dem Prozess gegen die vier mutmaßlichen Rädelsführer der mittlerweile verbotenen Nazigruppierung gesehen wurde.1
My impression from the trial is different. Of course, the courtroom was not stormed by interested visitors, but a handful of spectators were usually present. Unfortunately, my impression is not necessarily representative - due to my job, I was only able to be there in person on 21 of the 45 days of the trial. However, these spectators were often companions of the defendants, whose interest in the proceedings can presumably be explained by the fact that further proceedings are pending against them at the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office. Or they were observers from the opposite political spectrum. Spectators from the middle of society were indeed exceedingly rare, unfortunately.
But this is not necessarily surprising, if - as it happens in this article - protest against right-wing ideas is inevitably placed in a left-wing radical and anarchist corner, because there it continues:
Bei zwei Großdemonstrationen im Oktober 2012 und 2013 herrschte in der Stadt Ausnahmezustand: 150 Neonazis, 1500 Polizisten und 2000 Linksautonome, die aus der ganzen Region angereist waren, lieferten sich Jagdszenen.1
These figures lack any basis. While the number of neo-Nazis is still largely correct, in both 2012 and 2013, according to the police’s own figures, more than 2,000 officers were deployed in each year. The number of violent left-wing counterdemonstrators is however estimated by the police for 2012 at around 500. A concrete figure for 2013 is not available, but the 2013 report of the Baden-Württemberg Office for the Protection of the Constitution states that the number was lower than in the previous year.
Presumably, however, the term “left-wing autonomists” simply refers to anyone who shows their face against right-wing extremism. In that case, the number would at least be about right.
Eigentlich verstand sich Göppingen als multikulturell aufgestellte Stadt, in der Angehörige aus mehr als 100 Nationen wohnen, in der seit Jahrzehnten kein Rechtsextremist im Gemeinderat saß und die schon seit 2007 am Bundesprogramm gegen Rechtsextremismus mitwirkte. Doch plötzlich ging das hässliche Wort von Göppingen als ‘Wohlfühlort für Neonazis’ um. Der Begriff, von einer örtlichen Zeitung überregional lanciert, hat getroffen. Gestimmt habe er nie, sagt Ulmer. Doch das grausame Medienecho habe zu einer Mobilisierung der Mitte der Gesellschaft beigetragen. Auch der Oberbürgermeister Guido Till (CDU), der anfangs zögerte, weil er eine Vereinnahmung der Stadt durch linksextreme Kräfte befürchtete, stellte sich nun uneingeschränkt in den Dienst der Sache. Sogar seinen Bauhof setzte er gegen rechts in Bewegung. Für den im Oktober 2014 geplanten Naziaufmarsch blockierte er mit einer Leistungsschau den Marktplatz.1
As much as it is to be welcomed that the Lord Mayor finally took a clear position last year, it is fact that the NWZ has already proclaimed this “feel-good place for Nazis” in the issue of January 3, 2013. has. The mayor’s positioning did not take place until mid-2014, when it was already stated that no Nazi demo would take place anymore. And until the arrest of the four ringleaders in February 2014, the language of the city of Göppingen was that there was only one neo-Nazi in the city and all the others came from “outside”. But “Outside” here also included the districts of the city of Göppingen, except for the core city itself. This was not the mentioned unrestricted service at all - but only at best work to rule!
Doch zu diesem Aufmarsch kam es nicht mehr. Im Februar 2014 wurden die vier Rädelsführer der kleinen Göppinger Neonazizelle wegen des Verdachts der Bildung einer kriminellen Vereinigung verhaftet. Seither gab es nur noch eine kleine Solidaritätskundgebung bayerischer Neonazis am Göppinger Bahnhof.1
The adjective “small” can be interpreted in different ways, but when is a neo-Nazi cell small? The neo-Nazi cell around Beate Zschäpe was - in terms of personnel - smaller than the Autonomous Nationalists Göppingen. What qualitative statement about their activities can be concluded from this? And of course, compared to the October demonstrations in 2012 and 2013 with about 140 - 150 Nazis each, also the said solidarity rally at the end of August 2014 in Göppingen with about 40 neo-Nazis (not only from Bavaria) was smaller, but if such a number nevertheless gathers here, it shows that their comrades in Göppingen are still appreciated and respected in the networks and structures of the scene.
Der Spuk scheint vorbei. […] Kaum einsichtig gaben sich die beiden anderen, die sich von bekannten Szeneanwälten verteidigen ließen und die immer noch in Untersuchungshaft sitzen. Hitlergruß, Hitlerbilder und Judenscherze seien nur Späße im Suff gewesen, erklärten sie vor Gericht. Für eine tiefere innere Überzeugung stünden sie nicht. Allerdings passierte dem Angeklagten Manuel G. dann doch ein kleiner Freudscher Versprecher. Er sagte ‘Volksgerichtshof’, wo er doch eigentlich Verwaltungsgerichtshof meinte.1
Unfortunately, the “Autonomen Nationalisten Göppingen” did not only consist of the four accused here as ringleaders. The Stuttgarter Zeitung itself wrote on May 5 that the public prosecutor’s office in Stuttgart had brought up charges against 13 further alleged members of the AN Göppingen. And a recent report by the far-right party “Der III. Way” which is attributed to one of the two defendants who are still in custody puts it as follows:
Dagegen führten auch über 16 Monate in Haft bei uns nicht dazu, dass man uns brechen konnte. Kein Gefängnis schafft es, stolze Menschen zu sich duckenden Untertanen und Knechten zu machen. Ganz gleich wie lange die Haft noch andauern mag und wie lange der Prozess noch dauern wird, aufgeben werden wir nicht! Schließlich hat uns gerade auch die Verhaftung und dieser jeder logischen Grundlage entbehrende politische Schauprozess gezeigt, wie richtig unsere Haltung und unser Bild dieses Systems ist. Ein System, das neben der Verantwortung für bspw. Überfremdung, Arbeitslosigkeit oder Kinderarmut auch für Gesinnungshaft politischer Dissidenten die Verantwortung trägt.2
That definitely sounds like having fun while being drunk without having any political agenda in mind. Not.
In Zukunft dürfte es wohl ein anderes sein. Am Sonntag demonstrierten zehn Neonazis im 20 Kilometer entfernten Weilheim (Kreis Esslingen) gegen die Eröffnung eines Asylbewerberheims. Für Göppingen scheint das Kapitel hingegen ausgestanden zu sein - vorerst.1
As much as I like to agree here that the background of Nazi demonstrations in recent years has raised the hurdle for for such demonstrations - be it PEGIDA or so-called “asylum opponents” - in Göppingen, because every applicant would have had to distinguish himself from the Autonomous Nationalists first, I doubt that this will last for the future. This requires a lot of commitment from the broad middle of society. And this is unfortunately not promoted by articles like this one.
